The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has announced new rules to protect witnesses in criminal cases. The court will allow indicting grand juries to replace preliminary hearings in cases where witness intimidation has occurred, is occuring or is likely to occur.

Any of Pennsylvania's 60 judicial districts could petition the Supreme Court for approval to use the new procedures. The new rules take effect in 180 days.
