Buffalo, NY  --  At least 49 people were killed last night when a commuter jet crashed into a house outside of Buffalo, New York.

Continental Connection Flight 3407 was on its final approach to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport a little after 10 p.m. Eastern time when it crashed into a home in Clarence Center, New York.

The flight was scheduled to arrive at the Buffalo Airport around 8:30 p.m., but its departure was delayed due to high winds in Newark.

Witnesses said they heard the plane's engines wailing, then an eerie silence followed by the thump of an explosion.
