Meteorite Fragments Found

By: Meteorologist Steve Newton
Updated: February 18, 2013
CHEBARKUL, RUSSIA - A member of the Urals Federal University told Russian media fragments recovered from around a lake near the city are from the meteor that exploded over the region last Friday.

The meteorite is classified as a chondrite, a stony meteorite and contains about 10% iron. The fragments were not found in Lake Chebarkul, but around the lake where a 20ft wide crater had been found. Six divers who searched the lake Saturday did not find any fragments.

There is now disagreement as to the structure of the meteor. Russian scientists say the meteor was about 10 tons when it entered the atmosphere. NASA has said the meteor was 55ft across and initially weighed 10,000 tons.
