MARTINSBURG, BLAIR COUNTY - After the Blair County Department of solid waste shut down its community recycling drop off programs late last year, an effort was launched in Southern Blair County to give people a new recycling option.

That program appears to be off to a good start. The new community recycling center has been established on the grounds of the Martinsburg highway yard a short distance off of State Route 164 just outside of Martinsburg.

The center was developed to meet the community demand for a recycling center. The self operated recycling drop off site developed as a cooperative effort of Huston and North Woodbury Townships along with Martinsburg Borough

Plastic, glass, metal, cardboard and paper can all be keep out of the waste stream by using the center.  During its first weeks of operation, the center has been getting plenty of use.

Because no tax dollars were available to support the project, access to the site is limited to people willing to pay a $20 annual fee for key-card. Some recyclers in the community say they are happy to help cover the cost.

So far about 165 people have paid the annual fee to support the recycling program. Organizers of the programs say their goal is just to cover their expenses and with the fees they have collected, they expect to be able to do that.

Anyone interested in the Martinsburg community recycling program is encouraged to contact the Martinsburg Borough Office for more information.
