Weather Prognosticators Weigh In

Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of groundhogs who make their annual prediction about the whether or not an early spring is on the way.
In Athens, WV, Concord Charlie did see his shadow Saturday morning, meaning six more weeks of winter. General Beauregard Lee, who lives on a game ranch northeast of Atlanta, also saw his shadow.
Staten Island Chuck of New York, Buckeye Chuck of Ohio, Jimmy the Groundhog of Wisconsin, and Birmingham Bill in Alabama are among the groundhogs that agree with Phil this year.
An interesting note; since the first Groundhog Day in 1887, Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow 100 times, with this year the 17th time he has called for an early spring. There were no recordings in 1889, 1891-97, 1899, and 1943. The only recording of a partial shadow was in 1942 where it was recorded "War clouds have blacked out parts of the shadow."
In 2012 Phil called for six more weeks of winter, but the U.S. ended up having one of the warmest winters on record!
