CRESSON, CAMBRIA COUNTY--- An eighth grader at All Saints Catholic School won an essay contest and donated her winnings to help those who serve.

Ava Meyers won the VFW Patriots Pen essay contest.  This year's theme was "What would I tell the founding fathers."  Meyers beat out hundreds of other contestants and was given $100 for winning.  She donated all of the proceeds to Project Smile, a program that sends care packages to local men and woman fighting overseas.

"I was thankful for everything I got for Christmas and I thought that I could do something with the money that would not revolve around me so I donated it to Project Smile."

Project Smile is in its 12th year of sending packages to those serve.
