Fewer Deaths at Pa Hospitals

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: December 18, 2012
A new report shows a declining death rate in Pennsylvania hospitals overall, but the numbers aren't as good for western Pennsylvania

The Hospital Performance Report, released by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council shows the a number of people dying in Pa. hospitals dropped significantly between 2007 and 2011 for four  conditions.

They include pneumonia-aspiration, colo-rectal procedures,  kidney and urinary tract infections and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

However in western Pennsylvania, as a whole, hospitals had a significantly higher death rate than the rest of the state for congestive heart failure and pneumonia.

That was not the case for hospitals in our region, where patients fared better.
