DUNCANSVILLE, BLAIR COUNTY - A number of area Police Departments were honored on Thursday for their efforts to protect public safety. The program is designed to recognize departments that provide extra service to keep people from being injured in highway crashes.

State troopers in particular play a big role in driving home the safety message to young drivers.  That's part of the reason troop "G" in Hollidaysburg was given a platinum award for their safety promotion efforts.

Several other Blair County Police Agencies including Hollidaysburg, Duncansville, Altoona, Logan Township and the Penn State Altoona Department were also honored for safety promotion efforts that appear to be making a difference.  While the Departments honored say they appreciate the recognition, the real pay off for their safety promotion efforts comes from the traffic accidents and injuries to young people that don't occur.

The  sponsor of Thursday's awards, the Automobile Association of America  says with almost 1300  deaths on Pennsylvania highways last year, it make a lot of sense to focus attention  on those who promote highway safety.
