Robyn Graboski, a Wildlife Rehabilitator and Founder of Centre Wildlife Care introduced Sarah to Barbara, the Black Rat Snake.

The Black Rat Snake is found throughout the Eastern and Central United States.  It prefers heavily wooded areas, and is known for its excellent climbing ability, including the ability to climb a tree trunk without the use of branches, or even a brick wall.

The Black Rat Snake is officially the longest snake in North America.  Juvenile snakes are strongly patterned with brown blotches on a gray background, but these snakes darken as they age, eventually taking on a glossy black color.
