A new Dutch study finds women who suffer migraine headaches tend to develop lesions on their brains.
Leiden University researchers studied nearly 400 people. They used MRI to compare the white matter in their brains at the beginning and end of the 9-year study.
Researchers found 77-percent of the women who suffered migraines had a higher prevalence and increase in brain lesions. But the same could not be said for male migraine sufferers.
The good news is the lesions did not make the headaches worse or affect cognitive ability.
Researchers say future studies should look to pinpoint why the lesions develop.
