The State Department of Corrections announced today that Jerry Sandusky has been transferred to the State Correctional Institution at Greene to serve his 30 to 60 year sentence. That facility is located in Waynesburg, Greene County.

"While we normally do not discuss placement of inmates, this individual's notoriety called for the release of this information," Corrections Secretary John Wetzel said.

"We make individual decisions based on facts.  Given the high profile nature of this individual, coupled with the nature of his crimes, this makes him very vulnerable in a prison setting," Wetzel said.  "As such, he will be placed in protective custody at SCI Greene to ensure his safety while in custody."

Protective custody means Sandusky will be housed in a single cell and receive additional supervision and escort whenever he leaves it. He'll be offered one hour of individual exercise per day, five days a week and showers,  three times a week.  All of Sandusky's meals will be served and eaten in the cell.

All prison services, such as counseling, religion, medications and treatment programming will be delivered in-cell. Necessary medical and dental services are provided by clinical staff under escort of security personnel. All visits are non-contact.

Protective custody inmates are permitted to possess a television, radio and other personal property as authorized by the prison and conditional upon their compliant adjustment.
