In Cambria County, many disabled kids hit the ice, ready to compete in a hockey tournament.
Planet Ice in Richland is showcasing Sled Hockey this weekend in the First Annual Columbus Day Disabled Sled Hockey Challenge. Sled Hockey lets physically challenged kids play competitive hockey. They strap on specially designed sleds and use two special sticks to move up and down the ice. Michael Fitzgerald, an Assistant Coach from the hometown Sitting Bulls says these kids have a great time, win or lose.
"Actually it's easier, because I've coached soccer, and everyone gets down. I find these kids are in a good mood no matter what, they're out there on the ice, these kids are having a blast, they have so much fun, and everyone on the team loves it."
The tournament continues Sunday from 9 am - 12 pm at Planet Ice. The Sitting Bulls have kids from Cambria, Bedford, Somerset and Indiana counties, taking on kids from around the region.
