The drug company GlaxoSmithKline has agreed to pay $3 billion to states and the federal government to resolve allegations that it illegally marketed and priced some of its drugs. According to the settlement GlaxoSmithKline marketed the drugs Paxil, Wellbutrin, Advair, Lamictal, Zofran, and Avandia for uses not approved by the FDA and made false statements about their safety and effectiveness.
The settlement says the company paid kickbacks to healthcare professionals to prescribe the drugs and submitted incorrect pricing data for various drugs, thereby underpaying rebates owed to Medicaid and other federal healthcare programs.
The money Pennsylvania receives in the settlement will go to the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.
