BENNER TOWNSHIP, CENTRE COUNTY  --  The first of four new state prisons will break ground in Centre County later this summer.

The $174 million, 2,000 bed facility will be built near the State Correctional Institution Rockview.  Officials estimate the new prison, named SCI Benner, will employ around 600 permanent workers on top of 600 to 800 construction jobs.

Pennsylvania lawmakers approved the additional facilities when the state's existing 27 prisons surpassed 51,000 inmates, 8,000 more than intended.
