State Considering Highway Advertising To Bridge Transportation Budget Gap

HARRISBURG - Governor Ed Rendell has asked the legislature to reconvene this month to address the state's growing transportation funding gap.

Transportation officials struggling to bridge a three-point-five-billion-dollar budget shortfall are exploring selling ad space on PennDOT's variable message signs.

PennDOT spokesperson Rich Kirkpatrick says before space is sold on the state's 370 electronic message boards, several hurdles must be addressed such as certain state laws.

The General Assembly will discuss the plan, expected to generate about a 150-million dollars in additional revenue, in mid-September.
