HASTINGS, CAMBRIA COUNTY--- A family remembers their fallen hero, Marine Sergeant Derek Shanfield.

Shanfield was only 22-years old when he lost his life in Afghanistan.  His family said not only was he a great kid, but he always had a way to make people smile.

“He brought people together, he had this magnetic personality that everyone loved,” said Sydney Shanfield, Derek’s older brother.

Shanfield was a 2006 graduate of Central Heights High School and joined the Marines two months later.  Shanfield was tragically killed on June 8, 2010.  The Shanfield family has seen an overwhelming amount of support from the community.  They said that they couldn’t be more thankful.

“If it wasn’t for all of the support and kindness we wouldn’t be handling this as well as what we are,” said Shanfield.

Funeral arrangements are being handled through Easly Funeral Home in Hastings.
