HARRISBURG  --  A state lawmaker is proposing a bill that he claims would give residents more freedom to protect themselves.

Representative Scott Perry is pushing House Bill 40, also known as the "castle doctrine," which is based on the presumption that a man has every right to defend his home -- or castle.  The measure would remove a requirement that citizens retreat from criminals, allowing them to use force against an invader without fear of prosecution.

Opponents say the bill could make it harder to try certain crimes, such as shoot-outs between drug-dealers.
