Johnstown Faces Storm Water Fines

By: Kevin Flanigan

JOHNSTOWN, CAMBRIA COUNTY - State officials say the City of Johnstown could face thousands of dollars in fines every day if the City fails to correct a significant storm water problem.

City Council members in Johnstown were told this week that steps need to be taken to correct the City's outmoded waste water  system.

State investigators  say the current set up  allows raw sewage to flow into area rivers during wet weather.   Part of the problem  is attributed to downspouts that are illegally hooked into sewer lines and contribute to a system overflow during heavy rain.

The State's Department of Environmental Protection  is threatening to fine Johnstown up to $20 thousand dollars a day if if the  City doesn't take significant steps to fix the current waste water system.
