New Test IDs When Breast Cancer Will Spread

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: April 28, 2010

A new test could help women diagnosed with a type of breast cancer called Ductal Carcinoma or DCIS.  Only 1 in 10 women with DCIS will  develop a more invasive cancer, but it's difficult to tell which ones will be affected.

Scientists say the new test can help predict whether cancer will spread - or stay contained.  Researchers say they've discovered that women with certain characteristics in their breast tissue were at higher risk of more serious cancer within 8 years and the new test identifies those women. Doctors say it could lead to fewer mastectomies.

The test is still in the research phase and is not yet available to the public.
