Hotel Owners Charged with Failing to Pay Taxes

HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA -- Two Georgia men face charges they failed to pay nearly $348,000 in taxes on four Pennsylvania lodging establishments they own.
Authorities said today 47-year-old Charles Morais and 36-year-old Sunil Mir - both of Marietta - stand accused of committing the alleged acts in 2008 and 2009 while running Kronos Hotels LLC - which operates hotels across the United States. The pair are suspected of holding back on state sales and withholding taxes for Holiday Inn locations in Pittsburgh, York and Lancaster and a Clarion Hotel in DuBois.
In addition, the two face charges they neglected to pay a combined more than $11,000 in Pennsylvania personal-income taxes. If found guilty on all 30 counts filed, Morais and Mir could each face up to nearly 55 years in prison and more than $85,000 in fines. They could also be ordered to make good on any unpaid taxes.
