BELLEFONTE, CENTRE COUNTY - On April 15th, 2010, it has been five years since former Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar went missing.
He was last heard from on April 15th, 2005.
Police found his car the next day in Lewisburg, about 70 miles east of Bellefonte. About three months later, his computer was found heavily damaged on the banks of the Susquehanna River.
Gricar served as Centre County's District Attorney for more than 20 years. His disappearance is one of the most notable unsolved mysteries in Central Pennsylvania.
On April 15th, 2009, the Bellefonte Police Department released some new information in the case.
Chief Shawn Weaver said that Gricar had been searching on his computer for ways to erase a hard drive. He also searched about water damage and how to fry a hard drive.
Weaver also said that investigators found an opened box that at one time did contain hard drive erasing software. Weaver said he believes that Gricar used this software on his work-issued laptop.
The hard drive of that laptop was sent to a technology firm in Minnesota in the summer of 2009. The company was unable to recover any data off of the water-damaged hard drive.
Centre County's newest District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller formed a new review board to take a look at the case. It's made up of "season investigators" from around Centre County.
Miller said that the investigation is actually quite involved and that what has been reported in the media is only "the tip of the iceberg."
The Bellefonte Police Department is handling the investigation. If you have anything you would like to tell them about the Ray Gricar Case, they ask that you give them a call, (814) 353 - 2320.
Several rumors circulate about what the public thinks happened to Gricar:
- He Ran Away
- Suicide
- Homicide
- He was Kidnapped
