WASHINGTON - The Navy will name a new ship that is currently under construction after the late Congressman John Murtha.
The Navy Times is reporting that the Secretary of the Navy has decided to name a new amphibious transport ship the "John P. Murtha".
The selection of the name is to honor Pennsylvania's longest-serving congressman John Murtha. He also chaired the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee for a number of years.
Murtha served his country as a Marine officer before entering politics in 1974.
The ship to be named after Murtha is a military transport ship. It's capable of carrying about 700 Marines along with their equipment and vehicles.
