Tour de 'Toona 2010 Seeking Sponsors

By: Kevin Flanigan
Updated: April 2, 2010
ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY -    Efforts are underway to bring the Tour de ' Toona bicycle  races back to Blair County this summer. But a final decision on holding the event will not come  for about another month.

Especially in Professional Women  cycling circles, there is a lot of interest in  returning  for the International Tour de ' Toona  series of races  in  the Altoona Area  this  summer.  Coming up with the money needed to stage the event is the only thing standing in the way of the event returning to Blair County in August.   Race promoter , organizer, and State Representative  Rick Geist says  especially when it comes to the professional women riders, planning  for the event is already in place.   Geist says everything is in place to  host a full week long series of stage races that would bring back to this region many of the best female riders in the world.    Tentative plans call for the event to run from August 23'rd to the 29'th.   The only thing still needed  is firm commitments from corporate and other sponsors  to cover the projected prize purse of $50 thousand  and the overall $300 thousand cost of staging the  Tour.

Race organizers are currently going all out to try and lock down the sponsorships needed to fund this year's tour.  With  about 30  days until they will have to let racers know if the event is on or off,  an announcement  on the future of the tour is expected within a couple of weeks.
