DEP fines Bedford County company

HARRISBURG, DAUPHIN COUNTY-  The Department of Environmental Protection said Wednesday it levied the $22,000 penalty against Steckman Ridge LP for two unpermitted oil discharges at the Clearville Quarles Compressor Station in Monroe Township in August and October 2009.

Regulators say a malfunctioning compressor was to blame for the release of the oil - which found its way onto surrounding properties and a nearby pond.

The DEP said the company also failed to notify the agency of the incidents - as required.

It said Steckman has since taken steps to clean up affected sites and test local drinking water for possible contamination.
