New Treatment Effective For Head Lice

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: March 1, 2010
It's estimated that between 6 and 12 million kids get head lice each year. Head lice not only make kids itchy, they also give parents the jitters because they're hard to get rid of.

Now a study finds that a new treatment which contains benzoyl alcohol, is safe and effective at killing the tiny bugs. The prescription medication called Ulesfia works by suffocating the lice, instead of killing them with pesticides, like some other products.

The success rate after one week of treatment is high, at 91% which is not seen with the more conventional treatments. Even with the treatment, parents still have go through their child's hair with a comb and do head checks until the infestation is gone. And they have to get rid of lice on stuffed animals, clothes, and bedding.
