Johnstown, PA – February 17, 2010 – State Sen. John Wozniak said today that “after thoughtful consideration and extended discussions” with his family and supporters he has decided against being a candidate in the upcoming special election to fill the remainder of U.S. Rep. John Murtha’s term.
Wozniak (D-Johnstown) also confirmed that he would not seek the Democratic nomination for a full term in the next Congress representing the 12th District.
“I am very appreciative of all who approached me about my candidacy to fill the vacancy and run for the seat,” Wozniak said. “It is humbling, and I am flattered by the confidence that so many have expressed in me and my ability to serve in Congress.
“However, this is simply not the right time to go to Washington and start over as we battle for precious resources that will help us create jobs and economic opportunity,” Wozniak said.
The congressional seat is vacant as a result of Rep. Murtha’s death on February 8 due to complications related to gall bladder surgery.
“Jack Murtha meant so much to us all,” Wozniak said. “He was a legislative giant and a true friend who was ferocious in his defense of this region and its good people. He was able to do that because he built enough seniority in Congress.”
Wozniak said that if he were to be successful as a candidate for Congress, the Johnstown area would then lose his 30 years of seniority in Harrisburg.
“With three very senior members of the state Senate Democratic Caucus retiring at year’s end, I will be in an even better position to fight for jobs and more help for our region” Wozniak said. “We all need to pull together and fill the leadership vacuum that’s been created as result of Jack’s death.
“We cannot afford to lose so much seniority in both Washington and Harrisburg at the same time,” Wozniak asserted.
Wozniak was first elected to the state House in 1980. He began his Senate career following the 1996 election. He is the Democratic Chair of the Senate Communications and Technology Committee and is a member of the powerful Appropriations Committee.
Wozniak is a graduate of Johnstown High School and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He is married and has two children.
