National Survey Rates Cleanest And Dirtiest Beaches

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: July 30, 2009
If you plan to vacation at your favorite beach this summer, you may want to check out its rating first.

The National Resources Defense Council says pollution from storm water runoff and sewage overflows caused 20,000 days' worth of advisories and closures for U.S. beaches last year.  The environment group looked at water tests taken by public health agencies .

A Florida beach called Shired Island flunked testing 90% of the testing, making it the nation's filthiest. The Great Lakes Region beat out pretty much everyplace else for the consistently dirtiest beachwater.  The group found the cleanest water in Delaware, New Hampshire, Virginia, Arkansas and North Carolina.
