Hepatitis Screening

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: May 15, 2008
It's the number one reason for liver transplants in this country, but it's also a silent disease that often goes undiagnosed. Hepatitis C, which is one of the major causes of chronic liver disease, is also known by nicknames such as "the ghost virus" and "the silent killer."

That's why Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Regional Partnering for Health Services, Blair County Drug & Alcohol Services and Blair Gastroenterology Associates are holding a free screening for Hep-C on Tuesday May 20th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Hepatitis C is a virus that attacks the liver, causing scarring, liver failure and liver cancer. It's most often contracted through high-risk behaviors such as intravenous drug use, tattoos and body piercing, and sharing needles or razors with someone who is infected.

The screening is free and confidential. Pre-registration is preferred, but walk-ins will be accomodated as time permits. Call 889-6111 to pre-register or for information.
