A new study of half a million people shows a link between processed meat and premature death. Researchers found people's risk of dying early from cancer or heart disease increased with the amount of processed meat they ate. The study estimated that three percent of premature deaths each year could be prevented if we ate fewer hot dogs, sausage, and lunch meat.

However, the study also found that, in general, a diet high in processed meat was linked to other unhealthy choices. Men and women who ate the most processed meat ate the fewest fruit and vegetables and were more likely to smoke. Men who ate a lot of meat also tended to drink a lot of alcohol.
