GULICH TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY - It's a cross between an obstacle course and a race. Add in the snow and what you have is something called the Klondike Derby.

It's an intense yearly competition organized by the Boy Scouts of America.

At one recent derby held at Camp Wopsononock in Clearfield County, teamwork, endurance and problem solving were on full display as scout troops worked their way through various stations where the teams had 30 minutes to complete each task.

"They can use a lot of the things they'll learn out here to accomplish whatever they want to accomplish in the future," said Don Temchack, leader of Troop 57.

While going from station to station, teams had to pull custom built sleds full of materials needed throughout the derby.

For Guy Williams, one of the scouts participating in the Klondike Derby, the event is all about being prepared for the worst-case scenario.

"It's pretty much about survival and how you would do it if you were really in this situation," he said.

Another Klondike Derby took place at the Seven Mountains Scout Camp in Centre Hall.
