The agency has announced that the recommended dose of Ambien and some of its generic forms needs to be cut in half.
According to the FDA, new data show that blood levels of the active ingredient zolpidem, in some patients, may be high enough the morning after they use it, to impair driving and other activities that require alertness.
Federal health officials are requiring the manufacturers of the drugs to lower the recommended dose. Medications covered by the FDA directive include Ambien, Ambien CR, Edluar, Zolpimist, and Intermezzo.
