The Met Office

By: Meteorologist Steve Newton
Updated: December 23, 2012
Before the U.S. turned 100 years old, the predecessor to the National Weather Service was formed to record the weather and provide forecasts for a growing nation. Even before 1870, the United Kingdom had an office providing forecasts for Great Britain.

The Met Office was founded in 1854 as part of the Board of Trade as a service to mariners. This is unlike the National Weather Service in that the Weather Bureau (its predecessor) started as part of the War Department. Like the National Weather Service, the Met Office is now in the commercial sector working within the Department of Business Innovation and Skills.

If you're heading to London next September for the Steelers/Dolphins game, give their site a look before you leave.
