Many of us don't realize how many calories we drink. Mocha in the morning, a sweet tea with lunch, and a glass of wine with dinner, could put you at as many as 500 calories before you put a bite of food in your mouth.
"If you are drinking an extra 200 calories per day you have the potential to gain 40 extra pounds during the course of the year," says Carolyn Snyder, dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic.
She advises cutting calories by staying away from juice and flavored waters. Stick with water or infuse it with some fruit for a little flavor.
Snyder also recommends keeping track of the calories in your drinks by starting a food diary. She says you may be surprised how many you may be getting.
