Local Hospital in Talks with UPMC?

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: November 20, 2012
An area hospital is moving closer to a partnership with a Pittsburgh health system.

Altoona Regional Health System is actively pursuing an affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center(UPMC).

The local hospital hasn't  publicly announced the decision, but WTAJ obtained a copy of a statement released to employees today by Altoona Regional.  It says the boards of directors of Altoona Regional nd its parent corporation have voted to pursue detailed discussions with UPMC.

Meantime, nurses, technicians, and other hospital employees have launched an online petition drive urging that the affiliation discussions be an open process. Employees say they've been told the talks could take six months to a year.
