MOUNT UNION, HUNTINGDON COUNTY - Hurricane force winds from Superstorm Sandy ripped the entire roof off of a Huntingdon County home while the family was inside.
The Tress family has lived in this house on the corner of Shirley and Washington Streets in Mount Union for 15 years.
"It was helpless," Kimberly Tress said. "We were helpless. We couldn't do anything but watch everything get destroyed."
The tin roof that once covered this family is now a pile of debris on the sidewalk. Something Kim and her husband say is hard to believe.
"It was like we were just stuck in a twister," Buddy Tress said. "It ripped the whole block apart, uprooted trees."
"The tin flew off and blew back in the house. There was nothing we could do but run," Kim said.
And they say they've never seen anything like it.
"The whole inside of the house, the upstairs, light fixtures, water, the ceilings fell down, clothes got ruined, mattresses, beds, furniture, everything," Kim said.
Other neighborhoods in the area saw some damage, too. Uprooted trees, a power line snapped here and there, but nothing seems to come close to the damage done to the red house on the corner.
"When that wind started, there was just nothing, you couldn't do anything," Kim said. "Our power didn't go out, that's the only thing I prepared for and it didn't even go out."
Adam Miller says Huntingdon County really didn't see too much damage.
"Overall, we've fared very well in Huntingdon County," he said. "We're very fortunate that we got an easy, glancing blow."
Something the Tress family says surprises them.
"I've never seen anything like it," Tress said. "It was like it was stuck just on Shirley and Washington Street. That's all I can do to explain it. It's pretty much unexplainable."
The clean up continues Tuesday for the Tress family. They say they're not planning to move out of the house, just to fix it up.
