Coffee May Lower Skin Cancer Risk

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: July 2, 2012
Drinking more  caffeinated coffee could lower your risk of developing the most common form of skin cancer-- basal cell carcinoma. That's according to the American Association for Cancer Research.

Scientists  reached that conclusion after looking at long-term studies of more than 100,000 people. They also found that caffeine from other sources, like tea, soda and chocolate, may decrease basal cell cancer risk.

The amount of caffeine consumed did not affect the risk of the most deadly form of skin cancer----melanoma. Doctors say the best way to protect against skin cancer is to avoid midday sun, wear protective clothes and apply sunscreen often.
