Building a wind turbine from scratch is tough, hard work for Park Forest middle school kids. Work that comes with some difficulty. Students have been building a turbine for 5 months. It's made of mostly junk metals. Over that 5 month period about 60 students have had a role in getting the turbine to work.
Tuesday was it's first day in operation.  With every twirl, it's generating power to a room below. In March of last year, students launched their first wind turbine. And it's still spinning today. The two wind turbines on the top of the roof power six computers in this technology room at Park Forest middle school. School officials say that this school has the best energy efficiency rating in the State College Area School District. Students have used their enthusiasm to create an alternative form of energy. And, if they ever forget this assignment they can always look to the roof and remember this learning experience.
