Freshman Representative Jim Christiana of Beaver County says selling the governor's mansion won't solve the $1.3 billion budget deficit, but would prove to residents that state officials are serious about "tightening their belts." The 33-room Georgian mansion on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg has been appraised at $1.7 million, with an annual upkeep of $1.1 million.
Governor Rendell disagrees with the idea, saying the residence is cost-effective in that it's used for large meetings and public events.
