Scientists Say Coffee Won't Perk You Up

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: June 3, 2010
You may think that your morning cup of coffee wakes you up and gets you ready to take on the day, but researchers say that's an illusion.  Scientists  tested nearly 400 people who  abstained from caffeine for 16 hours and were then given either caffeine or a placebo.

The study showed that frequent coffee drinkers develop  a tolerance to  the stimulatory effects of caffeine. And while they may feel alerted by a cup of coffee, it's just because the brew is reversing the fatigue that was brought on by caffeine withdrawal.  In other words, caffeine only brings coffee drinkers back up to 'normal'.
