Officials Identify "Fetus"

By: Patrick Schurr
Updated: May 31, 2010

ALVERTON, WESTMORELAND COUNTY - What authorities thought was a fetus found in a Westmoreland County high school two weeks ago turned out to be nothing more than vegetable matter.

Pittsburgh forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht announced last Friday that an analysis of a suspected seven-week-old fetus discovered at Southmoreland High School was not human remains. Wecht was asked to analyze the material after a custodian found it in a stairwell near a girls' restroom, where blood was also found, on May 19th.

Superintendent John Halfhill said it was unfortunate that "a lot of conclusions were jumped to before confirmation was made."
