"A Night at the Races" for Neighborhood Revitalization

By: Patrick Schurr
Updated: May 27, 2010

ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - Bet you didn't think you could help revitalize a neighborhood just by wagering on the ponies. But in a little more than a week, you can, at "A Night at the Races."

The Leadership Blair County Class of 2010 will host the horse racing-themed fundraiser. Proceeds will go toward Phase Two of the Booker T. Washington Revitalization Project around 19th Street and 13th Avenue in Altoona.

This portion of the initiative focuses on creating the John Robertson Community Park. The group hopes it will be a place to unite families and provide them with recreation.

The park will have a walking path, outdoor exercise stations, picnic tables with grills, park benches and miniature flower gardens. It'll be across 19th Street from the completed Phase One of the project. Volunteers recently rehabilitated the outdoor basketball court there.

Leadership Blair County is sponsored by the Blair County Chamber of Commerce and will be joined by a number of community-based organizations in the revitalization projects.
