House Committee Wants to Honor Lock Haven-built Plane

HARRISBURG -- The House State Government Committee this week approved legislation that would designate the Piper J-3 Cub as the official aircraft of Pennsylvania.

The bill (H.B. 2480) will now go before the full House.  The legislation was sponsored by state Rep. Mike Hanna, a Democrat from Clinton & Centre counties, who said the Piper J-3 Cub, which was built in Lock Haven, Clinton County, between 1937 and 1947 by Piper Aircraft, was eventually modified and used by the United States Armed Forces during World War II for reconnaissance and as a hedgehopper during combat.

The Piper J-3 was originally intended for flight training but became one of the most popular and best-known light aircraft of all time. The Cub's simplicity, affordability and popularity invoke comparisons to the Ford Model T.

The Piper J-3 Cub is easily recognizable by its fuselage's famous standard yellow paint, which has come to be known as "Lock Haven Yellow."
