WINDBER, SOMERSET COUNTY--- Michael George was convicted of murdering his wife in 2008, now he may be getting a new trial.
George was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of his wife Barbra Marie George.
She was found shot to death in 1990 in their Michigan comic book store. Prosecutors said George killed his wife to collect insurance money. They also claim that he was having an affair with his store employee, who he later married.
George was arrested in 2007, at his comic book store in Windber, 17 years after his first wife’s murder. He lived in Windber with his second wife and children.
A Michigan judge ruled that based on new evidence the defense has, George should get a new trial. An appeals court upheld that decision in early May. The prosecution is fighting that ruling in Michigan’s Supreme Court. The defense said that they have discovered new evidence that points someone else as the killer and not George.
Until Michigan’s Supreme Court makes a decision on whether or not George should get a new trial he is being released on house arrest. His bond is $500,000.
If the Supreme Court rules in George’s favor his second trial would be begin next year.
