Mothers and More of Central PA Gives Local Mothers a Helping Handbag

ALTOONA – This May, in celebration of Mother’s Day, one non-profit organization is making sure that more mothers will get the thanks and recognition they deserve.

In honor of mothers, Mothers & More of Central PA is sponsoring an event called “Power of A Purse” to provide the gift of a purse to women, to symbolize the economic power a woman has in her purse through having money of her own control to buy things to provide for herself and her children, as well as to raise awareness of mothers' economic issues.

Mothers & More is seeking donations of new or gently used purses and small toiletry items for the women and mothers served by the Family Resource Center of the United Way of Blair County.

“We believe that a purse is symbolic of a woman’s economic power, but it is also a practical everyday item that can help her feel put together,” says Mothers & More of Central PA member and Power of A Purse co-chair Marty Jo Irvin-Stellabotte “Single mothers are the ones who struggle most to support their children. We want to show that we care about their endeavor to be successful and support their families.”

The purses will be collected throughout the month of May and distributed to the Family Resource Center during the first week of June.

Donated purses and toiletry items may be dropped off at the following locations: Altoona Area Public Library, 1600 5th Avenue, Altoona; Giant Eagle of Altoona, 181 Sophira Lane, Logan Town Center; The Gibson Agency, Allstate Insurance, Meadows Intersection, Duncansville; Hollidaysburg Area Public Library, 405 Clark Street, Hollidaysburg; Penn-Mont Academy, 131 Holliday Hills Drive, Hollidaysburg; and Roaring Spring Community Library, 320 East Main Street, Roaring Spring. Items may also be dropped off at the Mothers & More Bake Sale to be held outside of Altoona Wal*Mart on Saturday, May 22.

Business owners wishing to donate services or items are encouraged to contact Mothers & More at 814-934-9941 or e-mail morganzmom@gmail.com.

Mothers & More is a national, 501(c) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of mothers through support, education and advocacy. For more information about Mothers & More, please visit www.mothersandmore.org
