PLEASANT GAP, CENTRE COUNTY - $2.3 million from Federal Housing and Urban Development funds will be used to build a new affordable apartment complex in Pleasant Gap.

The 14 units will be built on two acres of land that is being offered by Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries. Construction is slated to begin this summer.

One hope is that seniors who move into the new apartments will be giving other families across the region a chance to own their first home.

"When (Seniors) do transition, if they are in an owner occupied situation, often times those homes often become available to first time home buyers. So, it's a 'win-win' for two households," Linda Marshall with the Centre County Planning Office said.

Seniors interested in living in the new units can apply once three quarters of the construction has finished.
