Rendell: Commit 40 Individual Acts

By: Kevin Valentine
Updated: April 22, 2010

HARRISBURG - Noting that individual acts of conservation can add up to one powerful remedy, Governor Ed Rendell is calling onPennsylvanians to take the Earth Day 40 Challenge to mark the 40th anniversary of the special day meant to raise environmental awareness.

It was 40 years ago today, on April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to action across the nation on behalf of the environment in the first Earth Day.

Rendell says ideas include buying locally grown food; driving less; exploring a new trail and leaving no trace; doing a home energy audit; and turning off lights and computers not in use at work.

The Earth Day 40 Challenge asks participants, either as individuals or groups, to select as many conservation actions as they'd like from a list of 40 actions -- or add some of their own ideas - and submit a checklist of what they have accomplished by June.
