ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - Monday, March 29, 2010 has been designated as "Vietnam Veterans Day" in Pennsylvania.
Supporters say the day will give some recognition to those who served during that conflict.
It was just over two weeks ago that the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed a special non-controversial resolution designating the day as Vietnam Veterans Day in the state. For some vietnam era veterans, this was a welcome move.
Floyd Dutton spends his days trying to meet the needs of Vietnam Era Veterans from his office in the Van Zandt Veteran's Medical Center in Altoona. In his view, the effort to recognize the contributions of large and aging group of veterans is well deserved.
This Pennsylvania move is part of a growing national effort to call attention to a Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day.
Around Vietnam Memorial sites like the wall that heals in Altoona, there is some support for finally focusing on this specific group of veterans.
Backers of this Vietnam Veterans day say paying attention to the needs of this one group of veterans can pay off for those who served in other conflicts as well.
And it can help make up for what was missed by the returning veterans decades ago.
Still there are some Vietnam era veterans who say they question the need to have a separate day for the veterans of that conflict when all other veterans are honored on the same day in November.
