Legal Challenges to Healthcare Reform

ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - Republican lawmakers in Harrisburg are trying to stop the healthcare legislation from affecting Pennsylvanians.

Attorney General Tom Corbett announced he'll file a lawsuit to block the legislation in Pennsylvania. He joins A.G.’s from other states, including Virginia, who want their states to be able to opt out of the federal plan.

Republican Representative Sam Smith from Jefferson County released a statement in support of Corbett. Smith said, "I think it will be very detrimental to the people of Pennsylvania to be forced into this plan. We are doing everything in our power to get our citizens out of this mess."

There's also legislation coming out designed to counteract the health care reform. One bill could prevent Pennsylvanians from being fined if they don't have health insurance. Another would block the federal health care bill from influencing state residents. Lawmakers say it's a clear 10th amendment issue of state's rights.
