Fish Oil May Help Prevent Psychosis

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: February 1, 2010
Fish oil may help prevent schizophrenia or other forms of psychosis from developing in people at extremely high risk of the conditions. Researchers studied 80 people with mild psychotic symptoms and problems functioning. Half received fish oil capsules---half didn't.

After twelve weeks, two people who'd taken fish oil progressed to psychosis. In the other group, which hadn't received the supplement , 11 developed a psychotic disorder.

Results of the study are in the February issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.  You can find more information here .
