No Dump Here

BOGGS TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY -

It is a controversy that has loomed on for 6 years, will PA Waste LLC get the approval from the Department of Environmental Protection to dig a landfill in Boggs Township.

Tuesday night 300 people gathered at the Lighthouse Church in West Decatur to discuss the matter. The Clearfield County Commissioners had a clear view saying "no" they do not want a landfill in their county.

Their biggest worry is the estimated 250 trash trucks a day getting off the interchange which is exit 120 now on Interstate 80 and making their way down Route 153.

 Secondly, they say none of this will be local trash because Clearfield is in the process of completing their ten year plan and this landfill is not in it.

They worry too about the impact the proposed landfill will have on tourism.

Those that agree with the commissioners wore their emotions on their sleeve in the form of a "no dump" sticker. They worry about the effect it could have on their water, the effect it will have on the roadways and worry about the amount of accidents the amount of traffic could cause.


The other side stated the job opportunities the landfill would create are too much to ignore. Plus, the township will receive money from having the landfill.

Furthermore, those people in favor of the landfill said Elk County right now is on top of tourism. Their new visitor center is bringing hundreds of thousands of people to the area and Elk County has a landfill.


The biggest point of the evening came from a man who is an engineer and has built a landfill. He explained digging the landfill could be a fatal mistake for in his research he found fault lines where they wish to dig.


The DEP made no decisions throughout the night and said they will personally answer each question posed in the testimony.
